UniKey President and Founder
Phil Dumas, president and founder of UniKey, had a vision for the future to create a more convenient way for people to access their home on a day-to-day basis, eliminating the nuisance of a traditional key. A veteran of the lock world and UCF College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) alum, Dumas brought his access control industry knowledge along with his experience in private equity to build a company and a solution that revolutionizes a market that hasn’t evolved in more than 1,000 years. In order to make his vision a reality, Dumas brought the idea on the ABC TV show, Shark Tank in May, 2012. His pitch created a shark feeding frenzy, making UniKey the first company to receive offers from all five investors on the program.
Dumas gained much of his access control experience as the VP of Product Development with Sequiam (a biometric access control company). Dumas helped develop and launch the first mass-market biometric residential deadbolt in conjunction with Black & Decker. Prior to founding UniKey, Dumas worked in the private equity field as a Vice President for Centrum Equities, focusing on turn-around and merger-integration efforts.
Today, UniKey’s access control technology powers the first keyless entry smart lock on the market, the Kevo. By uniquely combining existing technologies, UniKey has developed a proprietary and patented “hands free” Passive Keyless Entry system that can be easily integrated into any access control system to replace keys, codes, and passwords. UniKey’s technology affords secure and intelligent access by simply touching your lock without removing your phone from your pocket or purse. Serving the mass market by licensing its technology, UniKey works in partnership with market leaders, including the no. 1 lock brand in North America, Kwikset, for the Kevo residential Smart Lock and MIWA, for a Smart Lock for the hotel industry.
